Cataracts
A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens – the part of the eye which helps to focus light and produces clear images. This clouding results from the accumulation of protein on the lens, which causes images to appear blurry.
Some common causes of cataracts are:
- aging
- eye injuries
- certain medications
- some diseases such as diabetes and hypertension
- long term exposure to ultraviolet light
- exposure to radiation
Symptoms of cataracts may include:
- compromising of clear vision
- loss of contrast sensitivity
- veiling glare caused by light scattering as it enters the eye.
